The best hair oils for smooth, shiny, and glossy hair!

top 5 hair oils

As a beauty junkie, I love to try new products, always on the hunt for the holy grail — you know, that one haircare product that will make your hair soft, shiny, frizz-free… and if it can also help it grow, that would be awesome. I’ve told you: holy grail quest.

So, if I haven’t found the one yet, I have already come across a few gems that I gladly share with you today.

But before giving you my top 5 hair oils, please note that just like our skin, everyone’s hair has a different type. Mine is thick, curly, and naturally dry. I straighten it once a week, so I need really good moisturizing, smoothing, and anti-frizz products.

Hair oils are one of those beauty products that can change everything — when you find the right one.

The best hair oils make your ends look polished, add shine, tame frizz, and give that silky, touchable finish that makes your hair look healthier instantly.

But let’s be honest: not every oil is created equal. Some make your hair glossy. Some make it greasy. Some smell divine but do nothing. And some are genuinely worth the splurge.

Here are my top 5 hair oils for smooth, shiny, and silky hair.

1. Kérastase l’huile originale Elixir Ultime

Best for: Shine, frizz control, softness, heat protection, luxury finish

Kérastase Elixir Ultime is one of those iconic hair oils that has been around forever for a reason. It gives hair that expensive, salon-polished shine without making it look flat or greasy — exactly what I want when my lengths are feeling dry, dull, or over-styled.

The newest version is refillable and infused with camellia oils. Kérastase describes it as a multi-use leave-in hair oil that instantly nourishes the hair fibre, adds softness and shine, and has an ultra-light texture that protects without weighing hair down.

The brand also highlights heat protection up to 450°F, frizz control for up to 48 hours, and a smoother, shinier finish.

Why is it worth it

This is the oil I would choose when I want my hair to look instantly more polished. It works beautifully after styling, especially on dry ends, and gives that glossy, elegant finish. Very, “I just left the salon,” even when you absolutely did not.

For thick, dry, or frizzy hair, it is a classic. A little goes a long way, so start with one or two pumps and build only if needed.

2. Olaplex Nº.7 Bonding Oil™

Best for: Heat protection, shine, softness, frizz, damaged or color-treated hair

Olaplex Nº.7 Bonding Oil is more than a pretty finishing oil. It is part of the Olaplex bond-building universe, which is why it is especially interesting if your hair is damaged, bleached, colored, heat-styled or generally going through an emotional crisis.

Olaplex says Nº.7 instantly boosts shine, color vibrancy, and softness, while taming frizz and flyaways. It also offers heat protection up to 450°F/232°C and can be used on wet or dry hair before or after styling.

Why is it worth it

This one is excellent if you straighten or curl your hair often because it gives heat protection and shine in one step. It is also very lightweight, which makes it a good option if you are scared of oils making your hair heavy.

For my thick, curly, naturally dry hair, I see it more as a styling oil than a deep nourishing oil. It is perfect when you want shine, protection, and smoothness, but not necessarily a rich, buttery finish.

3. OUAI Hair Oil

Best for: Frizz, split ends, glossy finish

OUAI Hair Oil is the cool-girl hair oil. It is glossy, easy, chic, and does not require a complicated haircare ritual to make sense. It is the type of product you apply quickly before leaving the house, and suddenly your ends look much less tragic.

OUAI describes its Hair Oil as a multitasking oil that smooths frizz, seals split ends, and gives a healthy, shiny finish while protecting hair from heat. The brand also positions it as ideal for damage, split ends, breakage, heat protection, and shine.

Why is it worth it

This is a very good everyday hair oil. It gives shine and smoothness without feeling too precious or heavy. It’s also the best option out of the 5 for fine hair!

4. Gisou Honey Infused Hair Oil

Best for: Dry hair, shine, hydration, frizz control, beautiful scent

Gisou Honey Infused Hair Oil is probably one of the most recognizable hair oils of the last few years. The packaging is beautiful, the honey concept is nice, and yes — it smells so good. It is definitely one of those products that makes haircare feel more sensual and luxurious.

Gisou describes it as an award-winning hair oil powered by Mirsalehi Honey, designed for intense hydration, instant shine, heat protection, and lasting frizz control. The brand also says it can be used for pre-styling, post-styling, or as an overnight treatment.

The formula includes Mirsalehi Honey along with oils such as sweet almond oil, argan oil, and coconut oil, according to ingredient listings.

Why is it worth it

This is the prettiest ritual oil on the list. It makes hair feel softer, smoother, and more nourished, and the honey scent makes the whole experience feel addictive.

5. Oribe Gold Lust Nourishing Hair Oil

Best for: Luxury shine, dry or damaged hair, softness, frizz, color-treated hair

Oribe Gold Lust Nourishing Hair Oil is the splurge oil. The one that feels like it belongs in a marble bathroom, next to perfume bottles and a silk scrunchie. But beyond the packaging and luxury aura, it is a genuinely beautiful hair oil.

Oribe highlights its Signature Complex — watermelon, lychee, and edelweiss flower — to help defend hair from oxidative stress and environmental damage. The formula also features argan oil for lightweight shine, softness, and frizz reduction, cassis seed oil for moisture and strength, shea butter to soften dry or damaged hair, and jasmine oil to nourish and protect.

Why it is worth it

This is the oil I would recommend if your hair is dry, color-treated, damaged, or just needs that luxurious, glossy finish. It feels elegant, softening and very polished.

It is not the cheapest, obviously. Oribe never enters a room quietly. But if you love luxury haircare and want a product that makes your hair look smoother, shinier, and more refined, this one deserves its place.

How I use hair oil on thick, dry hair

Because my hair is thick and naturally dry, I use hair oil in a few different ways depending on what my hair needs.

On dry hair, I use a good amount as a finishing product to seal hydration and make the ends look softer and shinier.

And no, hair oils will not magically make your hair grow overnight. I wish. Growth depends on scalp health, hormones, nutrition, genetics, and overall haircare habits. But a good oil can help reduce breakage, protect the lengths, and make your hair look healthier while it grows.

Final Thoughts

The best hair oils are the ones that make your hair feel instantly better: softer, shinier, smoother, and more controlled. For my thick and naturally dry hair, I need oils that actually do something — not just sit on top looking cute.

These five are the ones that stand out because they bring something different to the table: Kérastase for shine, Olaplex for heat protection and bond-care styling, OUAI for effortless smoothness, Gisou for hydration and scent, and Oribe for that ultimate luxury finish.

The holy grail quest continues, obviously. But until then, these are the hair oils I would gladly keep on my bathroom shelf!
