There are perfumes that smell pretty. And then perfumes that feel like a mood.
Mugler Over The Musk belongs to the second category. It is warm, sensual, intimate, slightly mysterious — the kind of fragrance that does not scream for attention but somehow stays in the room after you leave.
For fall, when I want something softer than a big amber but deeper than a clean everyday musk, this is exactly the kind of luxury perfume I reach for.
Part of Mugler’s Les Exceptions collection, Over The Musk is not your basic “fresh laundry” musk.
It is smoother, warmer, more carnal. Mugler describes it as a scent where soft, powdery white musk meets precious ambrette seed, with pink pepper for a crisp edge, vanilla and white florals for refinement, and Cashmeran to amplify the warm, amber skin effect and lasting power.
In other words: if your fall perfume wardrobe needs something elegant, enveloping, and quietly addictive, Over The Musk deserves a spot on your vanity!

Mugler Over The Musk is part of Les Exceptions, Mugler’s more exclusive fragrance line.
The collection originally launched in 2014, exploring classic perfumery families through a very Mugler lens: more unexpected, more architectural, more dramatic.
Over The Musk was created by Jean-Christophe Hérault and Olivier Polge and launched in 2014.
Mugler gives the fragrance a soft but sensual structure:
The result is musky, warm, powdery, slightly spicy, and very skin-like. Mugler describes the formula as :
base-note-heavy, designed for a powerful trail, with Cashmeran bringing an amber-skin effect and lasting power.

What I like about this perfume is the mix of masculine and feminine energy! When you first spray it, the fragrance is strong and intriguing. It opens with a soft spicy brightness from pink pepper, but the fragrance quickly melts into something much more intimate: musky, powdery, slightly floral, and quietly animalic without becoming too heavy.
The ambrette brings that natural, almost pearly musk effect, while the Cashmeran gives it a warm, woody, ambery texture.
This is not a sweet gourmand. It is not a loud floral. It is not one of those aggressive “I entered the elevator before you” perfumes. It is more elegant than that.
On skin, it feels sensual in a very grown-up way. Soft, but not innocent. Clean, but not laundry-clean. Warm, but not syrupy. It is the perfume equivalent of cashmere on bare skin — which, honestly, is exactly the kind of drama I want from a fall-winter fragrance.
Fall is when I naturally move away from sparkling summer fragrances and start craving something with more textured. I want warmth, softness, depth, and comfort — but I do not always want a heavy vanilla or an obvious amber!
That is where Mugler Over The Musk becomes so beautiful. It gives you the sensuality of a warm fall perfume without feeling too dense.
It is perfect with a trench coat, a black cashmere sweater, leather boots, soft knits, rainy Paris mornings and that very specific fall mood where you want to feel polished but not overdone.
Over The Musk is very much in the unisex musky perfume category. And you can definitely feel it, especially when you first spray it. It’s the same category of unisex as JoMalon myrrh and tonka to me.
It does not rely on obviously feminine floral sweetness or masculine aromatic sharpness. Instead, it sits close to the skin with warmth, texture, and sensuality.
This is the part where we need to be careful.
I found discussions online suggesting that fans wonder whether Mugler Over The Musk has changed, especially because the Les Exceptions line has disappeared and returned in different markets over time. However, I did not find an official Mugler statement confirming a reformulation.
What we can say with confidence is this: fragrance regulations evolve. In the EU, Regulation 2023/1545 expanded fragrance allergen labelling requirements for cosmetic products, meaning more fragrance allergens must be declared on labels when present above certain thresholds.
Also, musks are a complicated family in perfumery. For example, musk ambrette is restricted/prohibited under safety standards, but that is not the same thing as ambrette seed, the natural musk-like material referenced in Over The Musk. IFRA documentation specifically notes that musk ambrette should not be used in finished fragrance products.
I’m questioning it because for a long time the perfume was off Mugler’s website, and it came back recently (with a high price).
You may love Mugler Over The Musk if you enjoy:
You may not love it if you want something very sweet, very floral, very fresh, or extremely powerful from the first spray.
For me, Mugler Over The Musk is one of those fragrances that makes fall and winter feel more beautiful.
It is not trendy in the loud TikTok sense. It is not trying to smell edible, viral, or shocking. It is sensual, polished, musky, and quietly luxurious — the kind of perfume that feels like a signature rather than a phase.
J’ai découvert ce parfum il y a plus d’un an je crois et il sent tellement bon que je n’ose pas m’en servir pour le moment, ha ha ha !!! Je le garde pour les grandes occasions. C’est un vrai bijou !!!
[…] changed the formula and it doesn’t have the same fragrance. Hopefully, I found another gem, Over the Musk by Thierry Mugler from the Collection privée: Les Exceptions. OMG, this perfume smelled so nice! But my misfortune […]
